Ideum recently completed a comprehensive audio-visual and spatial design project for a new purpose-built immersive classroom located in George Pearl Hall at the University of New Mexico (UNM). Designed to support architectural review, collaborative instruction, and large-format visualization, the classroom enables immersive group learning and critique through an integrated, flexible technology environment.
The project included the development of a full AV design package, encompassing layout, projector placement, curved screen geometry, power and data planning, lighting coordination, and detailed system diagrams. Ideum designed and integrated a multi-projector ultra-short-throw immersive system that creates a continuous curved visualization surface optimized for shared viewing and discussion. An audio system featuring ceiling microphones and pendant speakers ensures clear voice reinforcement and supports hybrid instruction. This is all controlled by a Crestron-based system, unifying the operation of video, audio, lighting, and automated room functions via ADA-compliant wall-mounted touch panels.
To further support collaboration, the classroom incorporates an Ideum 43” Drafting II touch table, which is an ideal addition to architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) environments. The Drafting II allows students and instructors to work with drawings at full scale, enabling intuitive plan design, review, and annotation as well as supporting instructor-led presentations and group critique. The table features a 4K UHD touchscreen display and a powerful integrated Windows computer, and includes casters for added mobility when moving around the classroom.
Ideum worked closely with the architects, electrical engineers, and construction teams throughout the project, ensuring that AV requirements were aligned with building infrastructure and the phased construction schedule. The team also provided procurement coordination, installation oversight, system commissioning, and staff training, ensuring the classroom will be fully operational for the Spring 2026 semester.
The UNM Immersive Classroom reflects Ideum’s approach to designing technology-rich environments that support collaboration, clarity, and long-term flexibility for both educators and students. Each element of the classroom was thoughtfully integrated to support real-world use in an academic setting.
