Visitors tell their own New Mexico Stories with a Flickr and Yahoo! Map Mashup

A community-based Website developed with the Museum of New Mexico Foundation

The Museum of New Mexico Foundation was looking for a way to better involve their visitors in the rich history and culture of New Mexico. New Mexico Stories is a community site that encourages residents and visitors to the state to share their stories and experiences. Some of the photographs and images that appear in the site are from museums, cultural institutions, and historic state monuments; however, most of the photographs and stories are from New Mexico citizens and visitors. Working closely with the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, Ideum designed and developed this unique Yahoo! map-based Flickr mashup. New Mexico Stories starts with a view of the state. From there, visitors can jump to specific counties across the state to learn more about different communities in New Mexico. In addition, a "gallery view" presents a random collage of 50 photographs and stories found in the group. Ideum developed this mashup site using Adobe Flash and helped developed a social media strategy for the Foundation. Visitor-contributed photographs and stories are drawn from a Flickr group administered by the Museum of New Mexico Foundation. Anyone can join as long as they follow the group guidelines. To contribute your own stories, visit the New Mexico Stories Flickr group, or the New Mexico Stories Website. Visit the Museum of New Mexico Foundation website to learn more.
